Oregon Ducks Preseason Analysis by DuckFan01

It has never been lke this before...
Never has there been so many questions, so many things to be excited for, so many things to hope for...
The 2009 Oregon Ducks looked more pumped then ever, with talent that I haven't seen since 2001.
I know what you are thinking about though, what about 2007? Did anyone honestly think that Dennis Dixon would come from sharing half the snaps with Brady Leaf to lead an offense which was a top 5 offense on a BCS run? Niether did I.
But these guys we have now two years later have the juice. They've shown they can do it, they have more heart then most football teams. Here is what I think the Oregon Ducks can get done this year and a look in on the talent they have.

Key Players

Jeremiah Masoli - This man holds our season, defense aside our offense will crumble if he doesn't perfrom to his hype (see Boise St. game last year). I think he is what he's hyped up to be though. I hate to say it becauce I hold Dixon close to my heart, but I honestly think Masoli has more talent on both the running and passing dimensions of the game. Though I don't think he had the motivation and feel for his team like Dixon had, but I think he can acheive that this season. He could develop the talent of Tim Tebow by the end of his senior year, not to the degree Tebow has, but I think of the same talent. They do have similar styles. If Masoli doesn't get injured and lives up to the hype I see Oregon going undefeated.
LaGarette Blount - Blount, I hate to say it, but where's the heart? Blount has so much potential, and even though he has performed for Oregon, I don't think he has lived up to what he can become. This guy is a beast, if he comes out this year and works is toughest on every play and pushes himself to the limit, I see a great back this year. Not in the same degree as Masoli, but I can see him as the second best RB in the Pac-10 behind Best.
Ed Dickson - What more can I say? NFL bound TE who has consistantly put up great numbers since he stepped on the field. This guy is a team leader and motivator.
Walter Thurmond - This guy is an absolute beast, if I was a WR playing against Thurmond I'd be scared out of my mind. Thurmond could potentially be the best corner in College Football, he is a great leader and will help take care of half the field.
Will Tukuafu - The D-line needs experiance, he gives that experiance and some, if he can help the other's on the line we will be more then set on defense.

Biggest Question

How Will the Lines Recover?
Losing Max Unger and Nick Reed was a hit, but the Ducks have refueled quickly. The offensive line will be great as they have for the past couple years, but the only problem will be the consistancy of center Jordan Holmes. His snaps have not been consistant, we need to have that Max Unger consistancy, we can't make mistakes like bad snaps that can cause turnovers.
Defensively is where I don't know what will happen, we will learn alot when the Boise Game comes around.

Offensive Outlook

The offense looks great, really great. Finally we have receivers that don't drop the ball and these guys are fast. Tyrece Gaines is a face we haven't really seen yet, but this guy is something else, he is fast, ferocious and catches almost everything thrown at him. Jamere Holland is a solid guy who leads the receivers, he will continue to impress. Then fast transfer from USC Jeffrey Maehl will factor in., for me he'll have to improve his catching to match the speed, but he could end up being the guy Jordan Kent was, the unexpected guy that just magically appeared down field.
On the backfield side we've already discussed Masoli and Blount, I want to talk about LaMichael James. I love this guy, he's small, but fast. Faster then Johnson, probably one of the fastest backs we have.He runs a 4.4 40 and is elusive at the line. Kind of like Jaquizz Rodgers, James can just magically get through the lines and speed towards the inzone. This guy will be a great sidekick to Blount.

Defensive Outlook

Take a deep breath, the defense will be better then last season. With 111th ranked passing defense last year I think we have room to improve. I think we have the talent to improve...ALOT. Walter Thurmond will take care of half the field on the DB side. Returner T.J. Ward will help him. Though we have some new starters they are experianced starters, Talmadge Jackson is a great asset.
The LB's are probably the fastest, toughest LB's we have. This will help us so much, we haven't really felt what it feels like to have good LB's, but I'm sure it's great, this will really help out the inexperianced D-line alot. The defense will be the key to the season, I think we have what it takes.

Predictions

@Boise St. - Oregon wins 42-21, Listen I know what you are thinking, but just hear me out. Oregon's offense is going to score, Boise St. will not be able to stop that. It's all up to the defense. The defense will have improved, they can defend the pass now, the D-line just has to learn the game fast and we stop Boise St. and hold them to 3 TD's.
vs. Purdue - Oregon wins 52-3 This game will not be like last season, it will be easy. Purdue is a weak Big 10 team now. Our offense should just boost some stats on this game.
vs. Utah - Oregon wins 38-17, I know that Utah beat Alabama last season, but they lost alot of talent, alot. Will they recover? I don't believe so, and Utah will come to the Zoo, it could end up being close, but I don't believe so.
vs. Cal - Oregon wins 42-35 This is the game that I'm excited for. This should end up being like 2007 all over again. Cal has an easy OOC so they should 3-0 like us when they come to Eugene. Cal is ranked above us so it will be just like last time they came, except this time Oregon will take it. Oregon will not let Cal beat us a fourth time in the row. If we stop Jahvid Best Cal will have nothing to turn to.
vs. Washington St. - Oregon wins 63-3, once again Wazzu is not good enough to even contend, we've been thorough the same old dance.
@UCLA - Oregon wins 35-31, don't take UCLA lightly now, they have a more improved team then last season and they almost beat us, although we have improved to this game could be a stumbling block.
@Washington - Oregon wins 42-21, Washington will put up more points then last time, but they still aren't the same team they used to be.
vs. USC - ???? Halloween night, this could be the biggest game of the season for the Ducks, this game could go either way, which is why I will not tough it untill the week before they play.
@Stanford - Oregon wins 49-28 Stanford is the darkhorse in the Pac-10, they could put up a big fight, Oregon will just outscore them though.
vs.Arizona St. - Oregon wins 52-14 Remember 2006? The domination Oregon handed to ASU? Expect that on a greater margin.
@Arizona - Oregon wins 35-20, I don't like going to Arizona, the last 2 times we went there they injured our QB. It's not a great place for me, I don't expect the same outcome, but I won't overlook them ever.
vs. Oregon St. - Oregon wins 42-38, We stole their Rose Bowl hopes, they could steal ours, Civil War is never certain, anything can happen, I just hope for a Duck win.
So what can happen this season? The least I see the Ducks at is the Holiday Bowl, which means that we can see some great things this season. Our bowl game could be a BCS, If the Ducks beat USC and go undefeated it will be NC bound. Ducks just need to play every play and give it their all.
The 2007 team shouldn't have gone as far as they almost did, the one thing they had was heart.
Heart will decide the 2009 season.
Hopefully it will lead them to the first NC in Duck history.
Go Ducks!

It's coming back...

The smell is in the air...

The fans are getting pumped...

Tickets are now on sale...

It's college football time just around the corner and I'm very excited for this season. There are many exciting things to watch this season all around college football and not just for my team the Ducks. A week before the season begins I'll post my preview for the Ducls, but right now this is all about the hype. Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, USC. Almost sounds like it would make a good final four in the playoffs hmm? *cough* *cough*, but we'll have to settle for some amazing bowl games.

For me there are only about 10 teams that could make it to the big dance at the Rose Bowl this year, but this is why college football is amazing because it's unpredictable. Tim Tebow could hurt his arm in a game and Florida could stink it up afterwards (which probably wouldn't happen, and Florida could still do good without him) but anyways it's shaping up to be a good season.

Here are the 10 teams that I think are really in the NC contention.

  1. Florida
  2. Texas
  3. USC
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Vtech
  6. Bama
  7. LSU
  8. Oregon
  9. Penn St.
  10. Oklahoma St.
Then 5 teams that could do it, but I personally don't see it.
  1. Ohio St.
  2. Ole Miss
  3. Boise St.
  4. Oregon St.
  5. Georgia
My dream championship matchup would of course be Oregon vs. Florida, but I think the matchup the nation would be hyped up for is...
Florida vs USC.

Wouldn't that just be amazing? 2 of the greatest programs in the past decade duking it out. One team proving that they are better then the other. Although Texas and Oklahoma are definetly in that contention too. USC has to deal with Cal and Oregon. Florida has a very easy schedule which is BS, but whatever. They got Tenn LSU, and Georiga as their hardest games. Texas and Oklahoma will have to deal with....well eachother and Oklahoma St.

All in all it's shaping up to be another great year of college football with some of thre most epic matchups ever. Only a month and a couple weeks left!

Final CFB NC prediction, NBA Power Rankings

My final prediction for the CFB National Title is...Oklahoma vs. Alabama with Alabama winning the NC. With the recent BCS polls out Oklahoma now wins the Big12 South and Will play Mizzou for the Big 12 Championship, which I'm sure they will win.

Despite many people's arguments I feel confident that Alabama deserves that #1 spot and can beat Florida in the SEC Championship. If I'm wrong you can stone me afterwards.

NFL- I'm taking a break seeing as nothing really has changed dramatically.

NBA:

  • 1. L.A. Lakers- The best in the NBA? We'll see as time rolls along.
  • 2. Cleveland Cavaliers- Are on one of the best runs I've seen from the Cavs, as expected James has done a great Job leading this team to being one of the top powers in the NBA.
  • 3. Boston Celtics- The Big Three isn't looking as dominant as last season.
  • 4. Portland Trail Blazers- A stunning turn of events have Portland on a 4-win streak beating Detroit, they are looking the best they have since the early 90's.
  • 5. Pheonix Suns- Shaq is starting to come back into power.
  • 6. Orlando Magic- These guys are magically (hahaha) winning. Jameer Nelson has done a good job with scoring.
  • 7. Houston Rockets- Yao Ming is starting to play like he used to, and new found speedster Aaron Brooks has been a great help.
  • 8. Denver Nuggets- Chauncey Billups has looked like a smart trade for Denver, but lets see as the season rolls on.
  • 9. Utah Jazz- Even with Deron Williams the Jazz aren't head of the North West
  • 10. Detroit Pistons- A loss to the Blazers was damaging and might lead to a turn around or a downhill slide for Detroit.

Predictions For NFL CFB, and NBA power rankings

CFB

So alot has happened last I posted, but now I'm going to take a shot at the BCS National Championship. My picks are....

Alabama vs. Texas.............. no tech.

Why? Well here why, they got Texas A&M left, they will win that. Than remember how close they were against Tech? I'm pretty sure that they go plays ready for them in the Big 12 game. Now Alabama pick I know I got Florida fans screaming right now. I think that Alabama just has the talent, they got one more game against Auburn, I'm 90% confident that they will win that game. It all depends who comes to play the most in the SEC game. SO there we go, lock those picks in and I will give BCS bowl predictions when the final Bowl Positions are in.

NFL

I'm going to split this up into top 5 NFC and AFC just to make things easier for me, so lets start with the NFC.

NFC

  • 1. New York Giants, Man these guys have definety made the jump from last year to this year standing out as a dominance in both offence and defence.
  • 2. Carolina Panthers, Had a record rushing game with both back Jonathan Stewert and DeAngello Williams putting up great numbers, Jake Delhomme has improved alot and the Carolina Panthers look better than they did in 2005, which they lost to the Seahawks in the 2005 NFC championship, (just wanted to point that out)
  • 3. Arizona Cardinals, whoa wait! Kurt Warner is the leader for MVP pick? Something happened over the Off-season. Cardinals have finally turned into a power in the NFC and has chances to upset some good teams coming down the road.
  • 4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now I don't really know much about these guys, but hey they got a good record.
  • 5. Detroit Lions......hahahhahaahhahahhah no
  • 5. (for realz) Atlanta Falcons, now here's a team that I thought I'd nevewr see good again after Michael Vick got kicked in the pants. Matt Ryan has done phenominal and I think an obvious choice for ROY.

AFC

  • 1. Tennessee Titans, now honestly if any of you though Tennessee was going to be undefeated at this point raise your hand. Thats what I thought. These guys in my opinion have been getting lucky and have not been ligetimately tested, but to be fair they get #1.
  • 2. Pittsburg Steelers, Now this is a much better season than last year huh? Big Ben and the Steelers have done wonders on defense and although they had a shaky last 5 games, I think they will get together and do good in the playoffs, (my pick for Superbowl AFC)
  • 3. New York Jets, Brett Favre is probably the best thing to come to the Jets for a loong time, expect though for them to get a wild card spot and probably knocked out first round. Unless the Jets do something suprising.
  • 4.  Indianapolis Colts, a team that I didn't think would improve from a bad start, but they might end up making it big in the second half.
  • 5. Miami Dolphins? Yes the Phins have been doing good right now, and my pick for a potential upsetter in the playoffs. If they make it of course.

NBA

  • 1. L.A. Lakers, seriously? These guys are insane, they have dramatically improved their defense and their offence, If these guys don't go all the way this year I'd be suprised.
  • 2. Boston Celtics, the big three, need I say more?
  • 3. Cleveland Cavaliers, King James and the Cavs are ballin right now.
  • 4. Utah Jazz, they've played some pretty easy teams, but have come up pretty stong to begin their season.
  • 5. Pheonix Suns, Shaq has improved alot and is actually doing soe impressive things this season, lets see if it continues.
  • 6. Detroit Pistons, Was Iverson a good trade? Lets wait and see more.
  • 7. Orlando Magic, Unexpected Players are stepping up to give the Magic a great start.
  • 8. New Orleans Hornets, personally I thought that they would have a better start with the players they have, but I'm sure as the season goes along they will get better.
  • 9. Denver Nuggets, Same question as #6
  • 10. Portland Trail Blazers, what? These guys are doing good? Yea considering they just had the hardest start of the season in the history of the NBA, to come out 6-5 is pretty dang impressive. They will improve better throught out the season.

NC prediction

So. I was wrong about Oklahoma. Apparently they couldn't hold off Texas. No matter. So I'm pretty sure that Alabama can win out. Of course the SEC is a tough conference, but here's the rest of theri schedule. Ole Miss, Tenn,  Arkansas St.,  LSU, Miss St, and Auburn. And of course the conference championship game which looks like it will be Florida. So Alabama has a very strong chance of winning out. If they beat LSU that will be my locked in for sure pick for the NC. Now for the Other team. I think that Texas will lose at least one game. They play Mizzou, Oklahoma St. And the Big 10 championship game. Which is a pretty brutal schedule. i'm predicting they will lose at least one game. So that give us Penn St. Which suprisingly, they might win out. Which would make a pretty boring bowl game in my opinion. Penn St. has not played someone good. And they won't at all. They play an extremely overrated Ohio St. Than Michigan St. So I hope Penn St. Loses just so that I can watch a decent NC game, for the past 2 years I haven't gotten one. Which leaves us to Oklahoma, Florida, or USC. Florida will lose to Bama in SEC championship. So I think it will be either Oklahoma or USC. My guess is Oklahoma.

Predictions For CFB, NFL, and NBA

Ok quickly stepping aside from the Ducks this week (which I greatly want to do) I will give you my insight to my predictions. Oklahoma will beat Texas this weekend and I think they will wind up againt The Crimson Tide in the NC. Alabama is probably the more solid prediction. It will also be nice to see them there for the first time for a while. Oklahoma though has a tough schedule. I won't be suprised if they are upset, but from right now it looks like they will be making yet another NC appearence.

NFL: :Looking ahead these are my top 10 rankings.

  • Giants
  • Cowboys
  • Titans
  • Panthers
  • Redskins
  • Bills
  • Steelers
  • Patriots
  • Cardinals
  • Bears

Sleeper for the NFL: Atlanta Falcons

NBA: My preseason Rankings:

Top 5 in West

  • Lakers
  • Spurs
  • Blazers
  • Hornets
  • Jazz

Tope teamsin East

  • Celtics
  • Pistons
  • Cavs
  • Bulls
  • Magic

There you go. NFL ranking will be updated every week on monday or tuesday. NBA will stay the same till the season starts, and CFB will stay the same unless either the Crimson Tide or the Sooners lose.

Have a good day
